OUR BEES

JT's Bees & Co. has seven bee hives. Depending on the time of the year there can be between 10,000 - 80,000 bees in one single hive!

Can you find one of our queens in the photo below?

How much honey do bees produce?

A worker bee makes about 1/10 of a teaspoon of honey in her whole life time! Each group of bees has their own job to keep the production moving. That's why so many of them are needed!

What happens if there are too many bees in 1 hive?

If the hive gets too many bees, the colony will produce a new queen and half the bees will swarm and leave the hive, with the old queen to find a new home.

How do you know when the honey is ready for harvesting?

The worker bees cover the honey with a wax capping. That's how we know that the honey is ready for harvesting!

Does honey ever expire?

Honey never expires. It will crystallize over time. To return it to a liquid state, immerse the jar into hot water or in a warm oven, with the lid loose. Even though it's faster, we don't recommend microwaving honey as it will break down all the nutrients that honey provides.

What are the health benefits of honey?

Eating local honey prevents seasonal allergies. Honey also contains antibacterial and anti fungal properties that can help to heal wounds, soothe a sore throat and aid in digestion.

The antioxidants  from the sugar in honey are a great defence mechanism for the human body and are particularly beneficial for cholesterol.
